バルニバービの名称由来

幼い頃、誰もが一度は読んだことのあるスウィフトの「ガリバー旅行記」。
その第3篇ー第4章に出てくる島の名前、それがバルニバービです。
そこには研究所機関が国王の命でいたるところに設けられ、様々な馬鹿げた研究が行われていました。
キュウリから逆光合成により太陽エネルギーを抽出する方法、永遠エネルギー、不老不死、蜘蛛に織らせる織物、等々・・・
これらの研究は絶対机上の論でなければならない、実現は堕落であるといったものでした。
ここでスウィフトは当時の頭でっかちの英国の風流を痛烈に批判しているのです。
21世紀を目前とした今(バルニバービ設立当時)、スウィフトの提示した「バルニバービの教訓」を踏まえ、
机上の空論ではなく、実体(アナログ)を伴った真の飲食ビジネスを推進するべく、
あえてこの逆説的ネーミングを引用いたしました。

Naming of BALNIBARBI

We all know Balnibarbi from our youth as the land in Part III, Chapter 4 of Jonathan Swift’s classic Gulliver’s Travels.
Balnibarbi is home to a grand research academy that undertakes various absurd experiments under orders of the king,
including trying to extract sunbeams from cucumbers through “reverse photosynthesis”, developing external energy
and elixirs of life, and having spiders weave textiles.
Of course such propositions can be nothing more than flights of fancy, and would in fact be corrupting
if they were ever realized. This was Swift’s commentary on English society of the time, which had become too
absorbed in shortsighted and impractical intellectual pursuits.
In the months leading up to the start of the 21st century-the era of Balnibarbi’s founding
– I was reflecting on the lessons of Balnibarbi that Swift laid out for us and decided that I wanted to launch an eating &
drinking establishment that was “analog” so to speak, rather than lost in the clouds in short-sighted,
impractical pursuits, and it is from this lesson of Swift that we draw our name.
